Many things have changed here since 1872, when Georges Blanc’s great-grandparents decided to settle in Vonnas as soft drink sellers and café owners.
As soon as he joined the family business as an enthusiast cook, Georges spared no efforts to transform this place…
A strong supporter of environmental protection, Georges quickly understood how important it was to secure a healthy and beautiful environment. The special touch he gave to the buildings creates a kind of magic atmosphere where the nearby water, flowers and neat gardens combine with an enchanting lighting as soon as night falls.
On over 12 acres around the original restaurant, about thirty houses have been transformed or renovated to make the “Gourmet Village” dream come true.
An allusion to the past: on each building, a museography based on illustrations narrates the story of these old houses and trades, now defunct, that used to be at the heart of this place.
A tradition that is almost 150 years old:
You enter the world of great flavours and food products. Today considered as one of the leading Ambassadors of French Gastronomy, Georges BLANC offers a cuisine that combines traditionalism revisited with creativeness around a wide range of top quality products cooked as the seasons go by. A cuisine of great personality, it reflects the Chef’s character and sensibility.
A great fan of his native region, Georges BLANC likes to work around the legendary Bresse Chicken, or revisit the “Vonnas pancakes” that used to be cooked by his grandmother… The heir to 3 generations of “Mother Cooks”, Georges BLANC is assisted in the kitchen by his son Frédéric who is carrying on the old family tradition.
In 1962, Georges BLANC came out first in his year at Thonon-les-Bains Hotel School. He then perfected his cooking techniques over a few years, and joined the family business in 1965 to work by his mother’s side. He took over from her in 1968, to become at the age of 25 the head of a restaurant that has been Michelin-starred nonstop since 1929, a unique case up to now.
He then undertook to convert the modest family inn into a jewel within the prestigious Relais & Châteaux network. The initiative produced immediate results.
A Finalist at the Meilleur Ouvrier de France contest (Best Craftsman in France) in 1976, he set the seal on his reputation when he was awarded his third star from the famous GUIDE MICHELIN in 1981. The same year, he was awarded the much sought-after title of “Cook of the Year” by the GAULT et MILLAU restaurant guide.
