Levada Walk – Rabaçal to 25 Fontes
A beautiful sightseeing walk along the World Unesco heritage “Laurissilva”.
Leaving Funchal, the tour heads up to the Paul da Serra (btw 1300 and 1500m / 5,000ft), the flat plateau out towards the west of the island, sometimes referred to as the roof of Madeira.
We drive across the Paul, where the vegetation is reminiscent of moorland, until reaching Rabaçal.
Tucked down the side of the mountain; Rabaçal is a protected nature reserve of native forest “Laurissilva” an oasis of green, with many waterfalls feeding the three “Levadas” that meet here. We follow the “Levada” do Risco, where the brave can cross under the waterfalls to see the Risco pool.
From here, we continue on to Vinte Cinco Fontes (25 Springs), experiencing on our way some wonderful views done the river beds and along the emerald green mountains.
After this pleasant three hour walk along two short “levadas” with remarkable evergreen landscape and waterfalls, a visit will be made to the village of Calheta (on the sunny southwest coast)
