Full-day Tour of Lisbon
The tour starts off towards our first stop, one of Lisbon´s main landmarks, the Castelo de São Jorge, an old castle and the city´s first fortress, with a history dating back to the II century.
This fortress owns fantastic views over Lisbon´s seven hills, the city and the Tagus River. Following the Castelo de São Jorge, get acquainted with the city´s central avenue – the Avenida da Liberdade, which is truly the heart of the Lisbon, as well as a reflection of fashion, elegance and business life. Next stop is in the town of Belém, located on the Tejo River bank, a bank from where the famous Portuguese ships once set sail during the era of conquests and discoveries.
Here we will learn about the age of discoveries through monuments such as: The Belem Tower (light and delicate in design looking more like a fairytale castle than a fortress) and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos monastery), where the remains of Vasco de Gama and King Manuel I (the king who named a unique decorative style after himself “Manueline”) lay.
Also in Belem, stands a modern statue, a monument to pioneers, which features Portuguese navigators, artists, poets and royalty. The Rossio is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful squares in the city, a living storybook reminiscing the time when the royal family often frequented the area to enjoy a play at the city theater (The Teatro Nacional D. Maria II). Following Rossio is the Praça do Comércio(Commerce Square), a majestic and mysterious arch that was once the main sea gate into Lisbon.
Relax and take a seat while enjoying a coffee at the first café ever in the city. This well preserved café still functions to this day serving its visitors by candlelight. Traveling along the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula, the Tagus, we reach the famous 25 de Abril suspension bridge.
Linking the north of Lisbon, with its suburban areas, it is one of the twenty longest suspension bridges in the world. From here the Cristo Rei (Christ the King) monument is clearly visible. Free time for lunch at a fish restaurant located on the Tejo River bank under the 25 de Abril suspension bridge, in an area known as “Docas”.
Following lunch you may visit the Oceanarium at the Parque das Nações or if that is not of your preference, visit the Palácio da Ajuda, a royal palace located in the city centre that was once the permanent residence of the royal family. This palace was rebuilt in a Baroque style soon after the 1755 earthquake.
