Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais is a five-star historic hotel located in Sintra, a resort town and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Much more than a luxury hotel, this magnificent property is a romantic palace with period architecture that will take you back to the elegance and atmosphere of the 18th century and the Age of Enlightenment.
A fascinating example of neoclassical residential architecture, the palace was originally built by the then Dutch Consul in Portugal, Daniel Gildemeester, to be his official residence.
During the 19th century, several distinguished Portuguese families lived at the Palace, including the fifth Marquis of Marialva, who built the triumphal arch linking the two wings of the Palace to commemorate a visit by King John VI and his Queen Carlota Joaquina. With a privileged location, the central arch provides perfect framing for the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace.
The property was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1955, combining the majesty and traditions of the 18th century with all of the comforts of the 21st century.
In 2009, the property underwent extensive remodelling and restoration work. All of the Palace’s furnishings, most of which date back to the 18th century, were restored by the highly regarded Portuguese Decorative Arts Museum team, from the Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva Foundation. The work involved 14 art workshops and around 30 different specialists, who worked on the Palace over a 10-month period.
The approximately 2.000 pieces of art within Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais come from very different artistic areas and include furniture, lighting, textiles, tapestries, paintings, murals, easel paintings, engravings and porcelain.
Of special note is the unique Steingraeber grand piano, with its delicately painted pastoral scenes and golf leaf decoration, of which only five examples are known to have been built in the 19th century by this prestigious maker of the world’s finest pianos.
